Anthony Davis beams with fond memories of his late grandfather, Lamont Eberhardt, who profoundly influenced his life growing up on Chicago’s South Side. Reflecting on their relationship, Davis recalls how Eberhardt recognized his potential as a basketball player long before Davis achieved All-NBA status in the 2014-15 season.

 

To honor Eberhardt’s legacy, Davis has tattooed a portrait of his grandfather on his right arm—the same arm he uses to demonstrate his basketball skills. The tattoo is accompanied by the words “REST UP Champ,” paying tribute to Eberhardt and the affectionate nickname “Champ” he gave Davis.

 

Although Davis had planned this tattoo for years, his commitments with USA Basketball and other obligations delayed the process. He finally completed it during the offseason, choosing to dedicate the ink to something deeply meaningful rather than a superficial design.

In addition to the tribute tattoo, Davis also has “Chicago” in script and his birth year, “1993,” inked on the underside of his right bicep. This design pays homage to his hometown and acknowledges its role in his journey to success.

Davis holds his grandfather in the highest regard, cherishing memories of Eberhardt’s kindness, gentle spirit, and support. Visits to his grandfather’s house were times of joy and relaxation for Davis, and he fondly remembers Eberhardt’s unique personality and family sayings.

 

Now, as a renowned basketball star and consistent All-Star, Davis is proud that his grandfather’s story will reach a broader audience through his tattoo. This exposure allows others to understand and appreciate Eberhardt’s profound impact on Davis’s life and career.
