Arsenal will head to Tottenham’s home ground for their fourth Premier League fixture, missing key players Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice.
Ødegaard, Arsenal’s Norwegian captain, picked up an injury during the September international break and might not be fit for the North London derby against Tottenham. He was seen in considerable distress and required assistance to leave the pitch.
The absence of Ødegaard, who scored in both fixtures against Tottenham last season, will undoubtedly affect Arsenal’s attacking strategy. Furthermore, Declan Rice, another pivotal figure for Mikel Arteta, is also unavailable. Rice’s recent red card in Arsenal’s 3-3 draw with Brighton means the team will be short two of their main central midfielders.
With Rice and Ødegaard out, Thomas Partey remains as the sole experienced midfielder available. Arteta may look to Jorginho, who has been with Arsenal for a while, to step up in Rice’s absence.
In Ødegaard’s place, Arteta could consider either Kai Havertz or Leandro Trossard. Havertz has been impressive recently in a false nine role but has traditionally been a creative midfielder, making him a plausible option to fill Ødegaard’s shoes. Trossard, known for his versatility, could also be an option; he can play various attacking roles, including as a playmaker.
Arsenal’s depth issues are becoming evident once again. The timing of Mikel Merino’s injury is particularly unfortunate, and the club’s decision to sell several backup players over the summer adds to the challenge.
Emile Smith Rowe’s recent move to Fulham and Fabio Vieira’s loan return to Porto have left gaps that could have been filled by these players had they stayed.
Gabriel Jesus is expected to return in top form and could take on the central striker role if Havertz is shifted to midfield. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are expected to be key contributors, with new recruit Raheem Sterling potentially coming off the bench.
