Kylian Mbappe was reportedly on the verge of joining Liverpool two years ago. However, the transfer collapsed after Paris Saint-Germain demanded an astronomical £338 million fee.
At 25, Mbappe left PSG for Real Madrid this summer on a free transfer after spending seven years with the French club. His departure was marked by tension, particularly after he was initially excluded from Luis Enrique’s squad at the season’s start.
Mbappe had nearly joined Real Madrid for free in 2022 before opting for a short-term contract extension with PSG. The Ligue 1 champions were displeased with not receiving a fee for their star player, who was acquired from Monaco for £150 million in 2017.
According to L’Equipe, PSG nearly sold Mbappe two years ago, shortly after he signed his new contract. The striker was reportedly unhappy with PSG’s transfer activity, having been promised signings like Robert Lewandowski and Bernardo Silva. As the transfer deadline approached, Mbappe sought an exit.
Both Liverpool and Real Madrid submitted bids, with Mbappe believed to have agreed on personal terms with Liverpool that would eventually allow him to join Real Madrid in the future. Jurgen Klopp’s team was even prepared to pay £169 million to finalize the deal. However, PSG halted the process by demanding a record-breaking £338 million.
Liverpool retracted their offer, and Real Madrid also did not follow through with an official bid. Consequently, Mbappe fulfilled his PSG contract and joined Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Get French Football News notes that PSG has denied L’Equipe’s report, asserting that Liverpool did not have the financial capacity to sign Mbappe.
