Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori has been forced to leave the Italy national team camp following an unusual injury sustained in their match against France on Friday.
The 22-year-old defender was taken off in the second half after injuring his ankle while Italy was ahead 3-1. The mishap occurred when Ousmane Dembele, falling from a challenge by Bastoni, inadvertently struck Calafiori’s leg with his studs.
In obvious discomfort, Calafiori was quickly substituted. Although initially thought to be a minor impact injury, Arsenal supporters are now concerned as the Italian player has been sent back to London for further treatment. Italy’s manager, Luciano Spalletti, attempted to calm the situation post-match.
Spalletti commented, “We need to assess Riccardo’s condition, but with our medical staff, there’s a good chance he’ll be ready for the next game.” However, Calafiori will not feature in Italy’s upcoming match against Israel at the Bozsik Arena on Monday.
This injury adds to Arsenal’s growing list of concerns. Mikel Arteta will be without key players, including Declan Rice, who is suspended following a red card in the previous game against Brighton, and Mikel Merino, who is sidelined with an injury from his initial training session. The Gunners face Tottenham in the North London derby after the international break, making these injuries a significant challenge for Arteta.
