The intense dispute between Kylian Mbappé and PSG is reaching its peak, as the French champions have refused to pay the former star forward €55 million in wages and bonuses.
On September 12, the Legal Committee of the French Professional Football League (LFP) issued a directive demanding PSG pay Mbappé €55 million, covering the final three months of his salary and unpaid bonuses. PSG was given a one-week deadline to comply with this directive but has swiftly announced that they will not adhere to LFP’s order.
Following his decision to join Real Madrid last summer after his contract with PSG expired, Mbappé claims that PSG still owes him three months’ salary along with a portion of the “loyalty bonus.” PSG argues that Mbappé breached the agreement by leaving the club, which they believe nullifies his entitlement to the final three months of salary.
The LFP has suggested that Mbappé should take the matter to the French labor court, while Paris Saint-Germain has stated their readiness for a legal battle at any court level to resolve the issue.
“Given the limitations of the LFP Legal Committee’s authority to fully adjudicate Kylian Mbappé’s case, the matter must be contested in a competent jurisdiction where PSG will gladly present its case,” PSG’s statement affirmed.
PSG’s legal team added: “From both a legal and practical standpoint, Mbappé made clear and repeated public and private commitments that must be respected, after being granted unprecedented benefits over his seven years in Paris. The club wishes for these issues to be addressed in a proper court if Mbappé continues to pursue this matter that damages our reputation.”
The LFP oversees issues related to France’s top two football leagues, but PSG has indicated their intention to seek a legal ruling elsewhere. Mbappé, aged 25, has claimed PSG owes him €55 million in wages and bonuses. However, PSG contends that Mbappé had agreed not to claim this amount as of August 2023.
