Arsenal icon Jens Lehmann has found himself in hot water after being stopped for suspected drink-driving while sporting lederhosen at Oktoberfest. The 54-year-old, a celebrated member of the legendary ‘Invincibles’ squad, was seen reveling at the massive Bavarian beer festival in Munich. Reports indicate he was pulled over by police after displaying unsteady behavior and emitting a strong smell of alcohol.
Attempts to conduct a breathalyzer test were unsuccessful, as Lehmann was reportedly unable to provide a sample. He was subsequently taken to a police station for further testing, and his driver’s license was confiscated as a precaution while the investigation unfolds.
Earlier, Lehmann was photographed enjoying the festivities in traditional Bavarian garb, surrounded by friends. A source noted the presence of police officers at Oktoberfest, tasked with preventing drink-driving.
Public prosecutor Anne Leiding confirmed that Lehmann was pulled over around 1:30 a.m. on September 23, 2024, due to erratic driving in central Munich. Authorities detected a distinct odor of alcohol and noted his unsafe driving, which led to a blood test after breath tests failed to yield usable results.
Lehmann, who played a key role in Germany’s third-place finish at the 2006 World Cup, has had a series of legal troubles in recent years. In December 2023, he faced a hefty £400,000 fine for using a chainsaw to remove part of his neighbor’s garage roof for a better view of Lake Starnberg. He has also been scrutinized for dodging parking fees at Munich Airport and was dismissed by Stuttgart in 2009 for attending Oktoberfest without authorization.
A regular at the festival, Lehmann has previously been spotted there with fellow football stars like Sol Campbell and Didier Drogba. He is also remembered for being the first player sent off in a European Cup final, having tripped Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o in 2006.
